Apple's two new X.400 products: MacX.400 v.1.1 and MacX.400 SD make
it possible for Macintosh users to send messages over the Internet and
other network environments. Both come with easy to use configuration
and administration applications. The v.1.1 product supports large
installations with multiple servers, while the SD (for "Small Domain")
product is for single-server work groups.
MacX.400 transforms a Macintosh computer into a Message Transfer Agent
(MTA) that supports X.400 messaging standards. With MacX running, you
can exchange E-mail across any platforms and e-mail systems connected by
X.400 networks. When working with an E-mail gateway, MacX.400 can
distrubiute X.400 services across an AppleTalk network to everyone in
an E-mail workgroup.
MacX.400 supports both TCP/IP and Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)
transports. You can also use X.25 and Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) as an
underlying network. MacX.400 also conforms with US and European X.400
profiles for interoperation with numerous other X.400 servers and vendors.
Other connectivity features include:
* Routing on any standard X.400 address attribute
* Support for multiple types of X.400 body parts, so you can exchange
binary attachments, ODA documents, and Macintosh files.
* End System to Intermediate System (ES-IS) routing protocol support
to register OSI addressing information autoamtically
* Easy to use X.400 API (Application Program Interface) for quick
implementation of X.400 applications on the Macintosh computer. This
makes it easy for developers to create X.400 gateways to existing E-mail
systems. You can also develop native X.400 user agents for the Macintosh.
